Song Meaning & Explanation

Laho opens like a dare — Shallipopi announcing himself as "lover boy for Benin" before the beat even settles, and that swagger never lets up for the next three minutes. This is a victory lap dressed as a song, and it mostly earns its strut.

The track's emotional spine sits in its lone extended English verse, where the bravado cracks just enough to reveal what's underneath it. "It's not the way you're seeing me here" reads as wounded pride masquerading as confidence — someone insisting he hasn't changed, that the streets he came up in (Sapele Road, Ugbighoko, Third Junction) still know the real him, even as fame has clearly moved him somewhere else. That tension between "I'm still that guy" and "look how far I've gone" is the song's most interesting current, even if Shallipopi never fully commits to exploring it before pivoting back to flexing.

Everywhere else, the writing leans into texture over narrative. The Edo-language hook — anchored by the repeated "lahọ" — functions less as translatable lyric than as rhythmic glue, a percussive hum that turns the chorus into pure vibe. It's a smart move sonically, even if it leaves listeners outside the language locked out of the song's emotional register at its most vulnerable-sounding point. The code-switching between Edo, Pidgin, and English gives the track a specific regional identity that a lot of Afrobeats exports flatten out, and that's worth crediting.

The flex bars themselves ("Don Julio," "paparazzi," the Balotelli name-drop) are fun but weightless — they entertain without adding much beyond confirming the persona. "Minister of enjoyment" is a nice bit of self-mythology; "Fayaman" and "Desperado" feel more like ad-libs wearing lyric clothing.

Laho is a mood before it's a message — infectious, regionally proud, a little thin on development. It's the sound of someone enjoying his own myth in real time.

This track is raw, uncomfortable, and deeply human. It doesn’t pretend everything is fine; instead, it stares pain in the face and still […]
